Collection: SAN MARZANO
Cantine San Marzano is one of the most important winemaking companies in the Apulian wine scene, which in recent decades has contributed significantly to its rebirth and enhancement. It was founded in 1962 by 19 winemakers, to join forces and face the challenge of a world of wine, which from a peasant dimension was beginning to acquire an important role within the agricultural and economic scenario of the region. Today the cooperative has over 1200 members and a vineyard park of about 1500 hectares , cultivated in the hinterland of Taranto, in the heart of the wonderful territory of Salento.
San Marzano finds its origins in two values: respect and modernity . Respect for a tradition that has ancient roots and lives again today in the gaze, hands and work of the winemakers who are part of it. Modernity for that idea of widespread and convivial wine, always open to new languages and different worlds, which is linked to a clear stylistic figure, made of elegance and clean tasting. The choice to focus above all on the enhancement of old bush vines with Primitivo, used for Primitivo di Manduria, and Negroamaro fits perfectly into this perspective, without however forgetting minor varieties such as Malvasia Nera del Salento, Verdeca or international grapes that have settled very well in Puglia, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. The suitable soils and the Mediterranean climate, sunny and very windy, thanks to the sea breezes that surround the Puglia peninsula, create the ideal conditions for a perfect maturation of grapes with particularly rich and intense aromatic complements.
The vineyard is the true center of the project, to the point that all San Marzano wines are born from grapes of excellent quality, which in the modern cellar are vinified with extreme care, in order to preserve the best varietal characteristics and to always bring to the fore the authentic flavor of the sunny and generous land of Puglia. The range of wines is very wide and divided into different collections. The possibility of being able to count on a vast number of plots also allows us to select the best vineyards, with the oldest vines, to create labels of particular prestige , which for years have been part of the restricted circle of the best wines of the region. The Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria is the label that most represents the way of thinking and working of San Marzano: a red that has completely changed the perception of Apulian wines on international markets. It was born thanks to the intuition of President Cavallo, determined to create a wine capable of enhancing the original authenticity of Primitivo in a new and modern way and thus transforming it into a point of reference for the type at an international level.
1962: THE FATHERS
San Marzano is a small town in the center of the DOP Primitivo di Manduria, a strip of land between the seas that bathe Puglia. It is here that 19 winemakers founded Cantine San Marzano. Long before the denomination of origin was born and Primitivo di Manduria was recognized in the world, they were chasing a dream.
1982: FIRST AMONG EQUALS
Francesco Cavallo is appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors A volcanic and visionary personality, helmsman of our reality. Forty years of uninterrupted presidency, planning the future and overseeing the present of the winery.
1996: THE FIRST BOTTLES
The commitment and dedication of the members allow the purchase of a modern bottling plant. The first bottles leave the cellar, triggering the transition from commodity to brand. From the bulk economy to the direct relationship with the final consumer.
2000: SIXTY YEARS
Iconic label of San Marzano, it contains its philosophy and essence. Produced from grapes from old vines, it is the expression of a thousand-year-old relationship between our people and the Primitivo grape. Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP is the label that has changed the perception of Apulian wines in the world.
2015: SAMIA
Our garden by the sea. 120 hectares dominated by a 16th century Masseria that can be seen walking among the endless rows of vines, the expanses of shrubs and the fields of fruit trees. A place of work and production, a laboratory of sustainability in continuous evolution. An ideal theater of sharing and Mediterranean beauty, a distillation of the experience that San Marzano offers to the world.
