We make traditional wines, we are not afraid to say it: we are proud of our identity. Every wine that can excite, must be able to tell a story, its own story

Martian Abbona
The history of the Abbona winery is full of hard work and of bets , loyalty to tradition and a passion for experimentation: a story that has placed the vineyard and the hills of the Langhe at the centre of its work , with particular attention to the Dogliani area and its most extraordinary fruit: Dolcetto.

Dad Celsus

A great story begins with a memorable beginning. The beginning of the Abbona winery is represented by the hard and brilliant work of the first Martian and his son Celso . The founders of the family and the first company nucleus, they were severe and traditional men, but brave And farsighted .

Celso Abbona was among the first of his generation to believe in the potential of Dogliani territory and to enhance the vine that on these hills was able to reach excellence: the sweet treat .

Together with his family, vine after vine, Celso planted the legendary vineyard of Bricco Doriolo in the hamlet of Santa Lucia di Dogliani. Today, this vineyard not only embodies the historical memory of the company, but represents one of the most prestigious cru of Dogliani , from which the company's flagship wine is obtained: the Papa Celso , dedicated to him.

The second generation

Upon Celso's death in 1964, the company passed into the hands of his sons Marziano (who bears the name of his grandfather) and Enrico Abbona. These were difficult and laborious years. The brothers transformed what was a traditional agricultural company into a specialized winemaking business . The first bottlings of Sweet treat under the family brand and, following in Celso's footsteps, investments in the territory and in the vineyards continue Dogliani .

  • The hills of the Langhe

In the early 80s Marziano and Enrico looked at the Langhe with renewed interest , challenge and a pinch of madness . When still the Barolo it's a bet to be won, they are looking for new plots of land on the nearby hills of Monforte d'Alba And Novello , municipalities that have been dedicated to the production of the "King of wines" for centuries. The two brothers do not limit themselves to buying land: they choose one by one the best plots and positions , the most suitable lands and the parcels historically considered the most prestigious: Ravera in Novello; Bricco Baron And Rinaldi in Monforte d'Alba. For these areas the notion of cru It is still a long way to go, but Marziano and Enrico have already understood that only the great vineyards have the strength to produce the best wines.

    • The Return to San Luigi

As the range of wines expands and arrives important international awards , Mara Abbona, Marziano's daughter, joins the company. It is 1999, the year in which, unfortunately, Enrico Abbona passes away following a serious illness (the Langhe Doc Rosso will be dedicated to him and Marziano's uncle, both named Enrico The two Ricu ).

Meanwhile, Marziano Abbona continues his research and purchase of the best plots of Barolo: Pressenda in Monforte d'Alba and Cerviano in Novello. 1996 sees the first harvest of Cinerino, Langhe Doc Bianco from Viognier grapes: an experiment conceived and strongly desired by Marziano's love for the wines of the Rhone Valley, which will mark a piece of the company's history and become one of the most original and esteemed whites of the Langhe.

At the end of the 90s, the time was ripe to build a new winery in the middle of the vineyards that have marked the history of the Abbona family. In Borgata San Luigi, work began on the renovation and expansion of the ancient “Cascina Valle dell'Olmo”, which was inaugurated in 2006. The project was ambitious: a large underground winery capable of minimizing environmental impact, creating a dialogue between past and present, and hosting all the stages of winemaking in one place.

The strength of tradition, the taste for innovation

The entrance into the second millennium brings with it several news : in addition to the cellar there is the desire to take new directions and trace routes unpublished .

Following the spirit of challenge , intuition And courage of father Celso, between 2007 and 2008 the Metodo Classico were born from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown on the hills of Dogliani. The sparkling wines are joined by the Langhe Doc Rosso Zerosulfites , a blend of Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo produced only in the best years, whose sulfur content is less than 5 milligrams per litre.

In 2007 the 30th anniversary of the first grape harvest is celebrated Dad Celsus and the following year Chiara, Marziano Abbona's youngest daughter, joined the company alongside her sister Mara, with Marziano since 1999.

Attention to the new generations and the use of modern technologies pushes the company to renew its communication through the use of social media. Alongside “virtual” communication, energy and resources are invested in hospitality and visits to the cellar, a privileged moment to learn about the hard work, passion and long tradition that the Abbona family has been telling through its wines for almost a century.
