Collection: SERRALUNGA D'ALBA MASSOLINO
Through the analysis of archive documents and some notes written by our ancestors, the maison was able to trace the birth of the company: 1896.
Massolino Vigna Rionda wines reflect a very clear production philosophy: a precise product that fully reflects the characteristics of the fruit and the territory.
Only one way pays: you must not add, but refine.
Safeguarding the highest and purest expressions of the grape gives life to extraordinary, complex and harmonious wines. Pursuing this goal often means taking a step back, placing the grape at the center , which in the unique territories in which we live is endowed with an incredible expressive capacity. Together with them, Giovanni Angeli, the winemaker, takes care of the delicate transition from fruit to wine with the clear goal of giving voice to the territory, its suggestions, its peculiarities.
Nebbiolo is extraordinarily sensitive to the hand of man and to the area of origin.
Often, even within the same vineyard, between one vine and another, small variations in the soil can mean important differences in terms of perfume, aromas, nuances in the wine. Knowing how to read these differences and enhance them is what we aim for.
Our life is marked by harvests and each one teaches us to face new challenges.
Thanks to continuous research, to the desire to experiment, but without revolutionizing, season after season the method is refined just like the wine, until arriving at the definition of a clear philosophy: each bottle is something unique, each vintage a new story, each wine the voice of this small, great world that is the Langhe.
Uncle Renato leafs through a notebook written by his great-grandfather, Giovanni.
Among the lines written in beautiful handwriting, a series of dates stand out.
1896 marks the birth of the family business.
As was customary in the Langhe, at the beginning the production was mixed: fruit, vegetables, livestock breeding and the sale of bulk wine.
Grandfather Giuseppe, son of great-grandfather Giovanni, contributed to the creation of the protection consortium – which today is called Consorzio di tutela Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe, Dogliani – and for the first time began to sell a small quantity of bottled wine.
Not a simple and risk-free acquisition. Grandfather Giuseppe falls in love with Vigna Rionda and completes the purchase of a small portion of the land. The operation involves an exchange. To obtain the plot, Giuseppe gives up one twice the size. A gamble, certainly, but also an act of faith and a test of foresight.
The strong bond with Serralunga is consolidated: our Company begins to expand by purchasing the Crus that will enrich the family vineyards. The first is Parafada.
The expansion campaign of the Vigna Rionda continues, with new plots acquired by the family.
The first bottle of Barolo DOCG Vigna Rionda Riserva leaves the cellar to arrive on the tables of enthusiasts. The fulfillment of a dream. The third generation is leading the company: after Giovanni and his son Giuseppe, Renato, Giovanni and Camilla are carrying on the tradition.
Massolino acquires new parcels of Vigna Rionda. This is the most important annexation in terms of extension among all those made up to that time.
Entry of the last parcel of Vigna Rionda, which completes the current property of the Massolino company on this hill. An important consolidation of its presence in one of the most famous mentions of the entire Barolo production area.
The brothers Franco, Roberto and Paola, the fourth generation of the Massolino family, begin working in the company.
With the purchase of Cru Parussi, the range of Barolo offered by Massolino Vigna Rionda is complete. A graft that contributes to broadening the horizon of our production beyond the borders of Serralunga d'Alba.
Right in front of the historic family home, in the historic center of Serralunga d'Alba, the new winery is taking shape. A place where there is also room for the desire to meet those who want to deepen their knowledge of our wines. Tasting and hospitality complete the picture of what is now Massolino Vigna Rionda.
The Massolino family's adventure in the prestigious Barbaresco hills finally begins. 2019 marks the birth of two new labels, which tell the story of their commitment to measuring themselves against one of the most important wines of Langa.
The uniqueness of the 2016 vintage has pushed the Massolinos to honor what the Vigna Rionda represents for the family: hence the idea of an exclusive dress for this Barolo Riserva, now legendary and of inestimable value in these extraordinary vintages. And it certainly does not end here: the list will continue to grow, from generation to generation.
