Collection: JERMANN ESTATE
The history of the Jermann family
1881 Great-great-grandfather Anton Jermann comes to Farra from the Austrian wine-growing region of Burgenland: this is the year the Jermann company was founded.
1930-1940 Angelo Jermann, who is now 93 years old, not only continues to carry on the family tradition of growing vines, but at the same time dedicates himself with passion to raising livestock, helping to make the Jermann brand an ethical and successful family business, all-round.
1971-1973 Silvio Jermann, son of Angelo and Bruna, who graduated in oenology in both Conegliano and San Michele, revolutionized the family business: upon returning from his long experience working overseas, he created the Vintage Tunina blend.
1975 Official launch and marketing of Vintage Tunina, which immediately earned a high-profile status from international critics and, to all intents and purposes, opened the new course of the Jermann brand.
07/07/'07 Silvio inaugurates the second Jermann winery and company headquarters in Ruttars.
STORY OF A VISIONARY
SILVIO JERMANN
of a visionary who
he doesn't accept compromises.
Quality year after year, innovation, bond, memory and respect for his family and the founder Anton who, way back in 1881, left a small village between Austria and Slovenia and put down roots in Friuli. Thanks to his concentration on results, no compromises in view of a goal or a dream to be realized, the figure of Silvio Jermann, right from the early years, is destined to leave a deep mark on the entire world of wine. Luigi Veronelli, a cultured and sensitive signature, and father of Italian wine culture, wrote in “Panorama” as early as 1979:
“(…) Let us instead, true Mennea of wines, deal with the Vintage Tunina, an exciting cru from the Collio Goriziano. Silvio Jermann, a young winemaker and friend, went against the grain: he vinified the best grapes, especially pinot blanc and sauvignon, from the Tunina vineyard (it was named after a lover of our Casanova in Ronco del Fortino di Villanova di Farra: Tunina). The result is a wine without equal: pale golden yellow, joyful and brilliant; a broad, fat and sensual bouquet (suggestions of sweet pepper, ripe tomato and acacia flowers chase each other); a dry flavour without harshness or weakness, also fat and sensual (with indescribable elegance); a vivid core in fabric that opens up to a peacock's tail; full character and race. The 7.5 litre Burgundy bottle costs 3,500 Lire. Winemaker: Silvio Jermann (…)”
It is practically impossible to list the reviews, articles, testimonials and awards earned by Jermann wines over the years. In 2000, in “Civiltà del bere” Cesare Pillon stated:
“Silvio Jermann is today the most representative winemaker of Friuli Venezia Giulia. His wines can be discussed, criticized, loved, but one thing remains certain: these wines are everywhere, in the world. Although Silvio is still far from fifty, he has already gained a vast experience, and not only in Italy: the successes and results of today are the result of years of work. The cellars and the estate are perfect and spectacular in every detail: the wines, pleasant, fresh and of great length are the mirror of their author. This time Jermann was able to create two spectacular wines and a third that stands alongside them (“as always” says Silvio). So we are talking about Vintage Tunina 1997, a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Picolit and some aromatic varietals, which confirm it as a “top wine”. Full-bodied and very pleasant, important on the nose and of significant complexity with notes of tomato leaf and fruit, ample and fruity in the bouquet, of incredible elegance. Capo Martino 1997 is a blend of Tocai and Pinot grapes matured in oak, with an extraordinary richness of fruity fragrances: “complex, concentrated, full-bodied, rich, balanced, elegant...” are just some of the comments from our top experts. Once again, Dreams 1997 confirmed itself to be one of the best wines: fruity and floral at the same time, perfectly balanced, light and spicy. Among the mono-varietals, we found an impressive Chardonnay and definitely appreciated the Afix Riesling, the Pinot Grigio and the Vinnae.”
30 Years of Gambero Rosso:
the coronation in Rome
In 2016, Silvio Jermann was crowned the most representative producer of Italian white wines in the world. The election took place in Rome, under the aegis of Gambero Rosso and by decision of the journalists of the most authoritative international newspapers who came to sign the coronation.
The result is neither casual nor unexpected. It is the fruit of a process that has distant roots and that never ceases to shake the world of wine: with products of impeccable quality, a continuous search for excellence, and an absolute respect for the land and its rhythms to which are added the characteristics of a unique winemaker, innovator and visionary since he was a boy, so much so that he thought of the concept of "blend" when it did not yet exist.
Daring enough to go to Canada as a young man to "uncomfortably make wines of his own" when he could easily have made them like the others, "comfortably at home".
