“Vigna di Gabri” is not a fantasy name, because the wine bears the name of Gabriella Anca Rallo – founder of Donnafugata together with her husband Giacomo – who originally wanted it because she believed in the enveloping fragrance of the Ansonica perfumes. Stefano Vitale’s illustration gave life to an author’s label that tells the story of the bond between Gabri and her cru. Mediterranean Elegance: refined interpretations of terroir. VINTAGE:
The 2022 vintage has yielded excellent results thanks to overall favorable weather conditions. Rainfall was concentrated in autumn and spring (between the end of April and the first ten days of May), providing the land with a good water reserve that in some vineyards was supplemented by emergency irrigation. In the last week of September. Temperatures were mostly in line with the average of recent years, while in June there was a peak in heat that slowed down the vegetative phase which then - thanks to the return of temperatures to seasonal averages - regularly resumed its course. From a quantitative point of view, there was a slight drop in production compared to 2021; the quality of the vintage is overall very positive.
HARVEST AND VINIFICATION:
The Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier were harvested in the first ten days of August; the Ansonica and Lucido (Catarratto) grapes were harvested in the first ten days of September. Fermentation took place in steel at a temperature of 15-16°C followed by aging for 6 months (85% in tanks and 15% on the noble lees in second passage French oak barriques). Vigna di Gabri is then aged for at least 3 months in the bottle before being released for sale.
TASTING NOTES:
Vigna di Gabri 2021 has a bright straw yellow color with greenish reflections. The bouquet is intense and complex, ranging from citrus and tropical fruit scents to floral notes and pleasant nuances of aromatic herbs. On the palate it is fresh and enveloping with a pleasant savory finish that lengthens its persistence. A fine and elegant white, with an intriguing personality and destined for surprising longevity. Longevity 10-12 years.
FOOD WINE PAIRING:
First courses of seafood cuisine, flans and baked fish. Also very good with delicate meats such as scallops in white wine. Serve in medium-sized glasses, without flare, of good height, opened at the moment, excellent at 10–12°C.
