FIRST VINTAGE 1982

A legendary wine, among the most famous and awarded Italian reds, San Leonardo represents the magical result of a tradition that is defined throughout the world as the “Bordeaux blend”. A symbolic wine of the estate, it has its roots in its thousand-year history. A classic blend Bordeaux of aristocratic elegance and extraordinary longevity

THE GRAPES:

International vines are grown within the estate; Carmenère , planted in the mid-1800s, is the true essence of San Leonardo wines, grown both pergola and Guyot, it gives character and identity to San Leonardo. Merlot planted in the early 1900s and grown both as spurred cordon and pergola, it offers roundness and softness. While the Cabernet Sauvignon , planted by Marchese Carlo in 1978 and grown exclusively with spurred cordon, gives structure and elegance. The planting density varies according to the type of cultivation: 6,200 vines per hectare for the guyot and spurred cordon and 1,800 for the double trentina pergola.

THE VINIFICATION:

In the old fermentation cellar there are tanks built exclusively in concrete. Here the red wines ferment spontaneously, without the aid of any technology or selected yeasts. Fermentations last on average no more than 15/18 days during which multiple pumping overs and délestages are performed. Once fermentation is complete, the tanks are racked and the marc is gently pressed under the watchful eye of the cellarmen, who have passed down the trade for generations.

THE BARRICAIA:

As often happens in ancient properties, the cellars are arranged on different levels. The fermentation cellars are accessed from the courtyard, here we find concrete tanks built immediately after the Great War, arranged on several levels. The oldest underground cellars, in the heart of the village, have recently been given new life, where large tanks dedicated to blending have been restored. The underground barrel cellar, built in 2001, has been reserved for a single large room. This is where the wines in refinement are kept and will remain for at least 24 months in small barriques to rest.

TASTING NOTES:

It presents itself to the eye with a beautiful ruby color. The nose reveals interesting notes of cherry and spices. In the mouth it is complex, savory and moderately tannic.
