A Primitivo linked both to the rustic and rural landscapes where it grows, and to the fertility and wealth that it represented for the families of the area, so much so that in times not too long ago it was even brought as a dowry by young brides. “Torcicoda” therefore recalls, on the one hand, one of the tools used by farmers to care for horses, and on the other, the sinuosity and lush nature of the shoots and leaves of this vine, also called “of the three harvests” for its fertility. HISTORICAL DATA: Masseria Maìme is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Alto Salento, not far from the town of San Pietro Vernotico – Brindisi. The estate extends along the coast, creating a unique landscape of vineyards that grow among woods and pine forests and disappear as far as the eye can see until they merge with the sea. The most common varieties are: Negroamaro, Primitivo, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. |
THE VINTAGE:
The 2021 vintage in Salento was characterized by a generally warm and particularly dry course.
The winter was mild with precipitation in line with the historical average while the spring was regular but with little rain.
The summer was dry and characterised by warm but not torrid temperatures, with moderate ventilation and good temperature variations between day and night.
On the one hand, this process favored the full ripening of the red grapes, and on the other, it allowed the grapes to preserve their aromatic freshness, benefiting from the influence of the sea breezes.
The harvest in general was late compared to the average of the last 10 years, the Primitivo ripened a week later than usual. The harvest took place in the second ten days of September at Masseria Maìme and between the 21st and 24th of the month at Tenuta Carrubo.
VINIFICATION AND REFINING:
The grapes were harvested slightly overripe. After destemming and a soft pressing, the must was transferred into stainless steel tanks, where the alcoholic fermentation took place at a controlled temperature not exceeding 28 °C. The maceration, managed with delicate pumping over and
delèstage, lasted for about 13 days. Torcicoda was refined 70% in barrique and 30% in tonneaux, both woods not of first passage, before being bottled.
TASTING NOTES:
Torcicoda 2021 has an intense ruby red color with a light purple hue. The nose is dominated by notes of red fruit, plum and raspberry, which combine with spicy sensations of coffee, licorice and tobacco. On the palate the entry is soft and broad, with a good structure supported by an elegant tannic texture. The finish is long and persistent with a pleasant aftertaste of cherry in alcohol.
