HISTORICAL DATA:

Fattoria Le Mortelle is located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, a few kilometers from Castiglione della Pescaia, in an extraordinary and fascinating position both for the nature and for the history of the places that surround it; the 170 hectares of vineyards are mainly cultivated with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and a small quota of Carménère, in addition to more recent plantings of white grape varieties such as Vermentino, Ansonica and Viognier. The estate is set in the center of a small amphitheater, located from north to south behind the estate, which overlooks the sea, capable of mitigating the climatic conditions. The soil, of medium texture, sandy and silty, has a predominantly siliceous-clayey composition and is, in certain areas, rich in skeleton. These are soils that tend to heat up easily, favoring the development of the vegetative cycle. In this unique terroir, varieties such as Cabernet and Carménère (respectively late and extremely late) manage to reach full tannin maturity, expressing their varietal potential to the full. Poggio alle Nane is born from the union of the best Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Carménère grapes with the unique terroir of the Poggio alle Nane vineyards, one of the company's most suitable areas and capable of producing grapes of extraordinary quality. A wine with great aromatic complexity and an elegant, dense tannic texture.

THE VINTAGE

The 2020 vintage was marked by a mild winter with abundant rainfall that ensured good water reserves in the soil useful for the start of the growing season. Spring, initially cool, continued with average temperatures thus favoring regular flowering and fruit set. The summer months, generally hot and dry, ensured the correct vegetative cycle of the vine and excellent development and ripening of the grape. The harvest began in the third week of September with Cabernet Franc, characterized by an elegant tannic structure, and continued a week later with Cabernet Sauvignon, characterized by fragrances of ripe black fruit. The harvest concluded with Carménère in the first days of October, with grapes capable of providing complexity and spicy aromas.

VINIFICATION AND REFINING:

The grapes, carefully selected and hand-picked in crates, were selected again on sorting tables before destemming and soft pressing. The pressed grapes were transferred by gravity into stainless steel truncated cone-shaped tanks, where alcoholic fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 28°C and maceration, which lasted for about 20 days. The wine was transferred to barriques, where malolactic fermentation took place and the subsequent refinement in French oak for 16 months.

TASTING NOTES:

Poggio alle Nane 2020 has an intense ruby red color. The nose shows sensations of ripe black fruit, blackcurrant and plum, accompanied by spicy and balsamic hints of licorice, coffee and sweet paprika; delicate aromas of Mediterranean herbs and lavender complete the bouquet. On the palate it is rich, enveloping and with elegant tannins. The finish is persistent, harmonious and characterized by nuances of tobacco and blueberry chocolate.
