“The two hills side by side, topped by a circle of cypresses, gave me magical sensations. I thought of a night sky full of stars, crossed by mysterious outlines of orbits, planispheres, presences. Then the stars overlapped at the intersections of the lines almost as if to mark the meeting, like routes on a star map”.
(Giancarlo Ferraris, label designer)

Acquired in 1995, Tenuta La Court was born to be the «Chateaux del Nizza Docg». The former Aluffi estate, of 19th century origin, a single body of over 20 hectares, arranged on two hills: a size that makes La Court one of the most important plots of land in Monferrato, a unique and inimitable stage for the qualitative elevation of the Barbera grape variety. It is from the best vineyards of the Estate that our Nizza and our most important Barbera are born, elegant wines, with great structure and longevity.

La Court is a perfect symbiosis between nature, landscape and human work: here stands the Art Park La Court , visionary and creative project by Michele Chiarlo, which celebrates the marriage between wine and art within a landscape setting recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The symbol of the Estate are the majestic cypress trees planted on the tops of the hills, dating back to the mid-19th century, celebrated by Giancarlo Ferraris on the label of Nizza Cipressi Docg.

The denomination Nizza DOCG

Born in 2014, Nizza DOCG is at the top of the Barbera grape denominations. The vineyards that can boast the “Nizza” denomination are located in the area historically suited to this grape variety. A very limited territory in Monferrato, which includes only 18 municipalities. The vineyards, located in large exposures (from south-east to south-west), have very low yields (less than 70 quintals per hectare) and lie on soils called “sabbie astiane”. The refinement period of Nizza DOCG is at least 18 months, for Nizza DOCG Riserva at least 30 months.

THE VINTAGE:

“The autumn-winter season began with abundant rains in November and moderate snowfall in December followed by a dry January until early February when a couple of snowfalls fell; all this allowed the formation of an excellent water reserve that proved invaluable in the summer. The rest of February and March were characterized by mild and dry weather, a situation that changed in April and May with abundant rains that rebalanced the vegetation of the vines that showed uneven budding between the high and low parts of the hills. May and June were characterized by a warm and dry climate with temperatures above average, only for a short period. The unusual and significant rain at the beginning of July definitely contributed to favoring a gradual ripening that occurred from 21 to 23 September in the canonical times of a superclassic vintage, with a harvest that was small in quantity but excellent in quality. The 2019 La Court wine presents itself with a highly impactful ruby color of notable depth. On the nose the intense bouquet, precise and elegant distinguish the features of this great vintage. Hints of red fruits (cherry, berries) stand out accompanied by notes of coffee and an elegant balsamic note. In the mouth, ample and with a notable structure; it surprises for its pleasantness and roundness that, thanks to the freshness and notable persistence, enhance it as a whole. It will be a memorable vintage of La Court in its evolution for longevity and character!” Stefano Chiarlo, winemaker
