"Audace: a wine that expresses the desire to take new paths, courageous and determined, with an expressive and elegant character like my great-great-grandmother Leonia who inspired me in my innovative choices. It was she who planted French vines in Pomino, vinifying them in the first Italian gravity winery, receiving the gold medal as a prize at the Paris Expo in 1878" - Lamberto Frescobaldi

CLIMATE TREND:

After a not too rainy winter, the budding of the vineyards in Pomino was rather early: the buds began to open with the first warm weather of early April. Only in the first 15 days of this month, all the vines showed shoots with numerous buds. Contrary to the averages of the period, the temperatures recorded in the following weeks were well below average: the month of May 2019 was the coldest and rainiest of the last 10 years. The flowering, therefore, was not particularly early and ended in the second ten days of June, a month that compared to the previous one was climatically the opposite: very little rain and high temperatures. The weeks of June were only the prelude to a warm and long season. Lying at altitudes of up to 700 m above sea level, the vines were able to take advantage of the alternation of sunny days and cool nights, to keep the grapes healthy and balanced until harvest.

VINIFICATION AND MATURATION:

The harvest was done by hand in 15kg crates during the coolest hours of the day. Once they arrived in the cellar, the grapes were subjected to a slow and delicate pressing that allowed the extraction of the must from the heart of the berry. Once the cuvée was obtained, a 12-hour cold clarification was carried out that allowed the clarification that was decisive in creating a qualitative harmony typical of Leonia. The fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a constant and controlled temperature; a part was fermented in wood. In the March following the harvest, the different cuvées of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were assembled, followed by tirage (addition of the liqueur de tirage) and refermentation in the bottle with subsequent refinement on the yeasts for 36 months. The operation concluded with remuage and dégorgement which was followed by further refinement in the bottle.

TASTING NOTES:

Leonia brut 2019 represents the pure expression of this great vintage at Castello Pomino. It has a beautiful bright straw yellow color with a particularly fine and persistent perlage. The bubbles form chains so thin that they caress the palate, determining that pleasant sensation defined as creaminess. The bouquet is very complex and at the beginning is dominated by notes of cedar and bergamot, hints of passion fruit blend with the floral notes of iris, acacia and orange blossom. The subsequent olfactory phase is characterized by the evident hints of wildflower honey and candied citrus fruits and the finish explodes with hints of pastry and bread crust. In the mouth it is clean, fresh, mineral and the gustatory finish is very persistent.
