Il Bruciato was born in 2002, in one of the most difficult harvests of Tenuta Guado al Tasso, to tell and make known in a modern style the unique terroir of Bolgheri. The carefully selected Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah grapes come from vineyards located on soils with a wide geological variability capable of expressing great complexity.

THE VINTAGE

The 2023 vintage in Bolgheri began with a rather mild winter and little rainfall, which led to a slight advance in budbreak, which began on March 20. During the spring, which was characterised by frequent but moderately intense rainfall, careful work in the vineyard was necessary to
preserve the health of the vines. July was a generally hot and dry month and positively slowed down the vegetative vigor of the vines creating the optimal conditions for the veraison and the beginning of the ripening of the grapes. In August the temperatures were normal while towards the end of the month, a disturbance of volcanic origin
Atlantic brought rain and refreshment, restoring favorable conditions for the good continuation of ripening. The month of September, sunny and dry, allowed full ripening to be achieved in every vineyard parcel, with excellent quality levels. The Merlot was harvested between the beginning and mid-September, while Syrah and Cabernet Franc between mid- and late September. The harvest concluded with the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot in the first ten days of October.

VINIFICATION

Upon arrival at the winery, the selected grapes were destemmed and softly pressed. Fermentation and maceration took place in thermo-conditioned stainless steel tanks for a period of approximately 10-15 days at a temperature of 28-30 °C. Part of the Merlot and Syrah musts were maintained at lower fermentation temperatures to better preserve the varietal aromas. Malolactic fermentation took place partly in barriques and partly in stainless steel tanks, and was completed by the end of the year for all varieties. The Cabernet Sauvignon was then joined by the Merlot, Syrah, and small quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot: the resulting wine met the barrique again, where it rested before being bottled.

HISTORICAL DATA

Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located in the small and prestigious DOC of Bolgheri, on the coast of Alta Maremma, about a hundred kilometers southwest of Florence. This denomination has a relatively short history (it was founded in 1994) but boasts an international reputation as a new point of reference in the world wine scene. Tenuta Guado al Tasso extends over an area of 1,000 hectares - about 320 planted with vineyards, the rest cultivated with wheat, sunflowers and olive trees - in a splendid plain surrounded by hills known as the "Bolgheri amphitheater" for its particular shape. The vineyards of Guado al Tasso are composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Vermentino grapes, the latter grown with both white and red grapes. They enjoy a mild climate due to the nearby presence of the sea: constant breezes mitigate the summer heat and the rigours of winter, clear the sky and keep the sunshine index high. Il Bruciato was born in 2002, in one of the most difficult harvests of Tenuta Guado al Tasso, to tell and make known in a modern style the unique terroir of Bolgheri. The blend used initially was that of Guado al Tasso and then changed the varietal composition over the years and had a dedicated range of vineyards. Il Bruciato was not produced in 2003.

TASTING NOTES

Il Bruciato 2023 presents itself with the usual intense ruby red. Notes of small ripe red fruits prevail on the nose, accompanied by pleasant hints of sweet spices, light menthol sensations and aromas of tobacco. On the palate it is well structured, enveloping and with a pleasant fruity aftertaste that gives it pleasantness of drink and persistence.
