Rovereto is one of the very few historic Crus of Gavi and "its toponym perhaps refers to the ancient presence of oak forests, whose leaves have an unmistakable shape and the clayey soil is rich in iron. All this went well with our preference for leaves and with our orange period. We thought of autumn, of the woods, of going mushroom hunting by poking with the tip of the stick, among freshly fallen leaves and other old ones". (Giancarlo Ferraris, label designer) |
THE VINTAGE:
“Winter is finally snowy. The first months of the year are characterized by rain and snow with accumulations in the vineyards of the Langhe up to 60 centimeters. In the month of March it never rains and the temperatures are always above average leading to an early start of vegetative growth. These conditions made us think of another early and hot year, but it will not be exactly like that. With spring fortunately the expected and precious rains arrive, but the temperatures until late May are below average slowing down the vegetative development of the vine. In mid-May therefore the year seems to be late, the vines stretch slowly, at night the temperatures are never high and the wind is always cold. From June onwards a long hot (never torrid) and dry summer begins, which continues in the month of September with milder daytime temperatures. The first two weeks of August are dedicated to thinning out the most abundant vineyards. The harvest takes place in the classic timing with grapes with spectacular health and ripening, such perfect conditions are rare. The harvest for the Cortese in the Gavi area it takes place from September 18th to 26th. The 2021 vintage, despite being characterized by an important climatic alternation (early vegetative start, late frosts, periods of drought), thanks to the resilience of the vine, surprised all of us producers, giving us very healthy grapes at harvest with perfect ripening and great balance. The white wines reveal a vintage of great olfactory expressiveness, excellent structure but above all of great harmony and character, suitable for having a notable longevity.” Stefano Chiarlo, winemaker
