Walking among the rows of Cabernet and Petit Verdot, my thoughts always run back to 150 years ago, when my ancestors first planted these varieties with the desire to produce a great wine. Since 1983, this desire has come true with the Cru Mormoreto, a wine with a vibrant, deep and harmonious character. Since 2013, a small amount of Sangiovese has further emphasized its elegance.
THE CLIMATE:
Autumn 2019 at Castello di Nipozzano was rainy, which allowed the creation of a good water reserve in the vineyard substrates. Winter was characterized by rather mild temperatures. Spring also recorded temperatures above seasonal averages. This situation favored a surprising vegetative-productive balance. A very favorable climatic situation which, together with the cool night temperatures, ensured strength and health to the vines, from budding to harvest. The grapes were therefore accompanied to maturation by an optimal situation, arriving at the harvest in perfect health conditions. The 2020 vintage enhances the characteristics of this extraordinary "terroir", thanks to a strong acidic vein and an important sugar endowment.
VINIFICATION AND MATURATION:
The Mormoreto vineyard is located at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level, on sandy soils with a south-west exposure. The grapes from the Mormoreto vineyard were harvested manually in 15 kg boxes. After an initial selection of the bunches in the vineyard, they were further selected upon arrival at the cellar. This attention to detail guaranteed the highest possible quality. The 2020 harvest produced wonderfully ripe grapes with a splendid acidic streak. Malolactic fermentation took place immediately after racking. At the end of the year, Mormoreto began its aging process in French oak barriques, where it remained for the next two years, taking full advantage of the natural micro-oxygenation provided by the oak. After bottling, the following months of aging allowed Mormoreto to harmonize, expressing its elegance and potential to the fullest.
THE WINE:
Mormoreto 2020 has an intense and brilliant ruby red color with purple reflections. The bouquet is extremely complex, with fruity, floral, spicy and empyreumatic notes. Rich fruit heritage, in which the berries dominate the scene: blueberry, blackcurrant and raspberry, accompanied by hints of morello cherry and cherry, but also sweet fruits such as fig and date, to finish pleasant and clear citrus notes of cedar and bergamot. The olfactory finish is dominated by notes of lightly toasted dried fruit, cinnamon, black tea and coffee. On the palate it is full-bodied, persistent and balanced. The tannins are particularly soft and silky. Extremely long finish.
Nipozzano Castle
An ancient fortress defending Florence since the year 1000, Castello Nipozzano is the most famous and historic property of the Frescobaldi family. According to popular tradition, Nipozzano means “without a well,” a testament to the fact that the area was poor in water, an ideal circumstance for growing vines.
The first evidence of the quality of Nipozzano wine dates back to the Renaissance, when even great artists such as Donatello and Michelozzo Michelozzi used to buy this wine.
A unique feature of the territory is due to the foresight of an enlightened ancestor of the Frescobaldis who in 1855 invested 1,000 silver florins to begin cultivating varieties that were then unknown in Tuscany, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot: after more than a century, the care of these magnificent vineyards allowed the production of the estate's great wine, Mormoreto.
