Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for an intriguing, decisive and well-balanced wine, capable of telling the unique character of the Maremma.

HISTORICAL DATA:

Le Mortelle is located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, a few kilometers from Castiglione della Pescaia, in an extraordinary and fascinating position both for the nature and for the history of the places that surround it. The Antinori family has always been present in these lands. In 1863, a patrimonial deed mentions among the possessions Poggio Franco, one of the most suitable vineyards of the estate, together with other parcels of land. Since 1999, the family has worked both on the vineyards and on the new cellar with the conviction that the area, still emerging in the Italian wine scene, is highly suited to the production of quality wines and that here the characteristics of the terroir and the varieties grown can best express themselves. The estate extends over 270 hectares of which 170 are planted with vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, in addition to more recent plantings of white grape varieties such as Vermentino, Ansonica and Viognier, and a small quota of Carménère. The soil, of medium texture, sandy and silty, has a predominantly siliceous-clayey composition and is, in certain areas, rich in skeleton.

TASTING NOTES:

Botrosecco 2023 has a ruby red color. On the nose, varietal aromas of red fruit such as black cherry and blackcurrant combine with fresh notes of eucalyptus, Mediterranean herbs and pleasant spicy nuances of tobacco and white pepper. On the palate it is enveloping, tasty, with soft tannins that accompany a long, pleasant finish characterized by notes of cocoa and fresh fruit.

VINIFICATION AND REFINING:

Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes, carefully selected at harvest, were destemmed and delicately pressed and transferred to stainless steel tanks; here, alcoholic fermentation took place at a temperature of around 25 °C in order to enhance the characteristic varietal aromatic component and maintain greater integrity of the fruit. During maceration, which lasted around 15 days, the cap of marc was moistened appropriately to extract only the finest tannins. The wine was then transferred to stainless steel tanks, where malolactic fermentation took place, completing by the end of the year. Botrosecco rested for 9 months in barrique before being refined in the bottle.

CLIMATE:

2023 was a generally cool and rather rainy vintage in the
first part of the season, especially until the month of June, while the summer
was characterized by heat peaks. These climatic conditions have
ensured regular sprouting of the plants. The lowering of the
temperatures towards the end of August and the beginning of September and the excellent
temperature variations between day and night have favored the maintenance
of the aromatic component of the grapes. The harvest began in the second
week of September with Cabernet Franc, capable of giving the wine
an elegant tannic structure, and continued a week later with the
Cabernet Sauvignon, characterised by aromas of ripe red fruit.
