Collection: SAN GUIDO ESTATE

“Speaking of our experience, we can say that we have been lucky in the last century. Tenuta San Guido managed to survive during the Second World War, the agricultural activities continued. An encouraging example of how passion and perseverance, even in difficult times, can ultimately transform into something extraordinary.”
Nicholas Incisa of the Rocchetta

“THE BOUQUET I WAS LOOKING FOR” MARIO INCISA DELLA ROCCHETTA

The Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta are among the protagonists of Italian history, from the early Middle Ages to the dawn of the Baroque era and beyond. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta was born in Rome in 1889 to a Piedmontese family, studied agriculture in Pisa and immediately cultivated a strong inclination for agronomy, with the dream, already in the 1920s, of finding perfection in agriculture and respect for the Earth. He moved to Maremma in the 1940s after marrying Clarice della Gherardesca in 1930, a descendant of one of the oldest families in Tuscany, that of Count Ugolino sung by Dante in the Divine Comedy. The Marchese immediately realized that it was one of the most extraordinary biotypes of Mediterranean Europe and began to experiment with some French vines, concluding that Cabernet, in fact so far from the Tuscan and Piedmontese tradition, respectively of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, "has the bouquet I was looking for".
This is how, thanks to the first cuttings received from the Dukes Salviati of Migliarino (near Pisa), he planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the lands that slope down from the Castiglioncello fortress into gentle hills to the sea, in the early 1940s. We know, in fact, that in addition to Cabernet (Sauvignon and Franc), the vines used in the first planting were various and ranged from Canaiolo to Ciliegiolo to white grape vines. The mass selection, oriented towards the use of Cabernet Sauvignon only, arrived in more recent times between 1960 and 1968.

Castiglioncello of Bolgheri

THE HISTORIC VINEYARD

Mario had sensed an extraordinary similarity between his land in Bolgheri and the Graves region in Bordeaux, due to a soil that is mainly gravelly and stony, mixed with clay, very favorable for the production of great reds. From 1945 to 1967, Sassicaia remained a strictly private product, reserved for family and friends. The first vintage to appear on the market was 1968.

Luigi Veronelli was the first to notice the greatness of that wine:

“Well dressed and brilliant, a dense and self-contained bouquet, of uncommon surly elegance… consistent strength in well-structured fabric.”

(Luigi Veronelli, Panorama, 1974)

The third generation

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

Today, the third generation of the family as wine producers is represented by five cousins with the task of preserving this culture, enhancing and increasing its values. Priscilla, daughter of Nicolò Incisa, has the task of representing and telling, as head of external relations, the indissoluble bond that exists between the company and the family, a team with heterogeneous skills and passions, grown inside and outside the boundaries of the Estate, and very tied to this territory.

Their children look to the future with the same eyes as their parents and previous generations. With a sense of great responsibility, aware and motivated by the fact that the history and continuity of Tenuta San Guido is entrusted to them.
