For us the vineyard is something alive, an experience we want to make live.
Tradition and rigor . Lightness and passion. Care for the landscape, art , community. Sustainability and experimentation. With a pop brushstroke and a touch of lightheartedness.
Since 1956, Michele Chiarlo has been vinifying the essence of Piedmont, loving and valorizing the most incredible wine-growing territory in the world. We cultivate 110 hectares of vineyards between Langhe, Monferrato and Gavi, the best crus in full compliance with strict ecological criteria, the terroir and their expressions.
The passion for his land and the winemaking experience, lead Pietro Chiarlo in 1952 at the helm of the Cantina sociale di Calamandrana , as president. A role he will hold until 1980, contributing to the development of viticulture and the valorization of Piedmontese and Italian oenology. In 1956 Michele Chiarlo begins his adventure as a wine producer . In years of hardship and poverty, he understands that the road to the emancipation of the Piedmont hills is in quality wine, starting from the choice of the most suitable vineyards and areas. The first harvest of Barolo bottled under the name of Michele Chiarlo and dated 1958 .
Michele expands the boundaries of the wine market . He is among the first Piedmontese producers to believe in the success of Italian wine abroad. Since the mid-1960s, he has tirelessly explored the Northern European and American markets, earning the trust of importers and consumers around the world.
In 1972 Michele Chiarlo consolidated his success . A larger and more rational headquarters was built in Calamandrana. Following his father's advice - "use patience and sacrifice, but only buy vineyards in great positions", Michele began to select the best plots of land in Langhe, Monferrato and the Gavi area. A meticulous and patient search, which led him to acquire some of the most prestigious crus in Piedmont. Raising quality of Barbera and with it, the value of Monferrato, his land of choice . This is the dream of Michele Chiarlo who, among the first, realizes in 1974 a Barbera with malolactic fermentation. A finally adult, stable wine, whose rusticity, if properly guided, can be the raw material for wines of exceptional international standing. Starting from this conquest, Michele Chiarlo will continue to invest and believe in Barbera d'Asti, helping to spread its rightful fame and rightful value throughout the world.
The company purchases plots in the major Barolo crus . In 1988 in Cerequio, a hamlet of La Morra; the following year in Cannubi , the hill “blessed by God”, perhaps the most historic, important and prestigious cru in Italy.
In 1995 Barbera finally has its temple. Michele Chiarlo acquires the Tenuta La Court , twenty extraordinary hectares in Castelnuovo Calcea, the historic heart of the denomination. Not just a place of production, but a laboratory where wine, landscape and community find a ground on which to dialogue . It is in La Court that the passion will be born and the investments of Michele Chiarlo and his sons for Nizza Docg, the «Super Barbera» of Monferrato will multiply. The great adventure of Nizza begins. Together with the oenologist Giuliano Noè, Michele Chiarlo is among the pioneers of the new denomination and of the long battle for its recognition, crowned in 2014 with the obtaining of the Docg. In 2003, the Art Park La Court was born , inside the estate of the same name. It is the first example of land art among the vineyards. In 2004 Michele Chiarlo has had the honor of being chosen to be part of the Institute of Italian quality wine Grandi Marchi , which brings together 19 highly prestigious Italian companies with the aim of promoting high-end Italian wines throughout the world. In 2011, Palas Cerequio was founded , the first relais dedicated to the crus of the King of wines, the only one at the center of a large Barolo vineyard. In 2012, Michele Chiarlo was among the founders of the Accademia del Barolo.
